Migration to Australia

Changes for Welfare Workers with Diploma Qualifications

DIAC recently announced changes to the English proficiency level for those people who wish to have their qualifications assessed as a Welfare Worker for the purpose of migration to Australia under the skilled migration program.

The AIWCW (Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers) is the gazetted assessing authority for welfare work for the Australian Government’s skilled migration program.

As of 1 January 2010, applicants will need to demonstrate proficiency in the English language with an overall score of not less than 7.0 in the academic version of the IELTS test.

Please note that the number of points allocated to this occupation as per the SOL has not changed ie 60 points.

Furthermore, those with diploma qualifications in welfare work will be required to have at least three years of additional professional work experience. Those with bachelor degree qualifications in welfare work are unlikely to be affected by this change.

Prospective students are advised to carefully consider their choice of course before applying for a course in this field.
